Vaclav Rylko and Dean Causevic will be the only two Europeans to receive the sacrament of Confirmation from the hands of Benedict XVI during the final mass of WYD in Sydney tomorrow, together with 22 other young people. Vaclav Rylko is eighteen. He lives in the diocese of Ostrava and Opava of the Czech Church. He is studying at lycée and is involved in youth pastoral work in his parish. Dean Causevic lives in Brislach in Switzerland (canton of Basel) and is of Bosnian origin. He’s 23 years old and a student at the Faculty of Slav language and literature at the Bern campus of the University of Fribourg. He received no religious upbringing in his family (his father is Muslim, his mother Serb-Orthodox), because his parents wanted him to decide for himself once he became an adult. He has had various contexts with Christianity and with the Catholic world, but the decisive encounter with faith occurred at university. "Faith in God is liberating and matures the heart", said Causevic before travelling to Australia, in an interview for the website of the Swiss Church. "Receiving Confirmation from the Pope he concluded is an incredible opportunity given to me".
