DARFUR: MENEGAZZO (BISHOP EL-OBEID), "DECISION TAKEN AT THE WRONG TIME"

A decision taken "at the wrong time" may cause "negative consequences for the peace process in Darfur": it was the comment declared to SIR by Bishop Antonio Menegazzo, apostolic administrator of El-Obeid (the Catholic diocese in Darfur), in relation to the action of the representative of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Luis Moreno-Ocampo, meant to accuse President of Sudan Omar Al Bashir, in the last few days. Al Bashir is accused of the Darfur genocide. Since 2003, 300,000 people died there, with over two million refugees. Msgr. Menegazzo, combo representative from Padua, said in an interview to be published at old.agensir.it: "the judicial action against Al Bashir amazed me, not because I am in favour of the innocence of the President, but because the action is against a head of state still in power. Why don’t they take any judicial actions against other heads of state, maybe even guiltier?" In his opinion, and considering the obvious reactions of protest by the Arab world, it might cause a "slowdown in the meetings for peace". In his opinion, "the negative reactions by the majority of Sudan citizens, except for Darfur and maybe the South of Sudan, might also be foreseen. The accusation of their leader is a remarkable humiliation! Usually, love for one’s fatherland prevails over all the rest, and the people in the opposition support the President against the interference of ICC in the home affairs of the country".
