EU: RELATIONS WITH SERBIA AT THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS COUNCIL. A DEBATE WITH BLAIR ON THE MIDDLE EAST

Among other things, the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, gathered in Brussels yesterday and today, "hailed the establishment of a new government in Serbia, with a clear European project", and "welcomed the news of Radovan Karadzic’s arrest, which is evidence of Belgrade’s government’s commitment to peace and stability in the Balkan region". The EU’s diplomacy leaders, chaired by the French Bernard Kouchner, widely discussed the common European security and defence. During the meeting, they discussed "the future of the relations between the EU and Ukraine, in the run-up to the Evian summit of September 9th, which should take stock of the current negotiations for a stronger agreement" with the EU. The 27 Ministers of foreign affairs discussed the situation in the Middle East and tackled "in particular the risks that embargoes are placing on the peace process". The debate was attended by Tony Blair, special envoy of the Quartet. In addition, the agenda included the situation in Zimbabwe, Somalia, Chad, Iran and the "rising tension between Georgia and Russia".
