IRAQ: NAJIM (HOLY SEE CHALDEAN PROCURATOR), "LET’S HELP CHRISTIANS TO REMAIN" (2)

As for the situation of the Iraqi taking refuge in Europe, Msgr. Najim confirmed a concept already expressed on several occasions by Card. Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches: "in relation to VISA issue, one cannot decide on the basis of the requester’s religion but of his real need and necessity. The risk – added Najim – is creating useless expectations and to encourage a further exodus from the country towards Europe. In this perspective, a few initiatives, conducted by Iraqi bishops, too, might turn out negative. Those initiatives are meant to sensitise a few European governments with respect to Iraqi refugees. In these cases, the key point is coordinating all actions, diplomatic actions, too, to find out a useful and far-reaching solution for Iraqi people living abroad. It is necessary to work to create projects meant to foster permanence in Iraq, letting refugees go back to their country to give back hope to some areas of the country, such as Baghdad and Bassora which are out of the aid circle, for safety reasons, too. The goal is the one which the Church has always tried to reach: pacifying the country and encouraging wellness, dialogue and living together of Muslims and Christians".
