GERMANY: DIOCESE OF FULDA, SUMMER EVENTS FOR THE YOUNG ON ETHICAL CONSUMPTION

Consumers’ behaviour is the theme selected this year by the community of the young (KjG) of the diocese of Fulda for its summer events. Every summer, the KjG selects a spiritual, social or political subject in order to raise the awareness of young people and give them food for thought. This year, the KjG wants to raise the awareness of children and young people about consumption. During meetings, weekend events and workdays, the participants will discuss issues relating to global economy and fair trade. A first step towards critical consumption was taken by the KjG in 2007, during the diocesan conference, when they joined the boycott of the goods of a well-known multinational drink manufacturer, that had been launched by the Federation of Young German Catholics (Bdkj), because it had committed many breaches of human rights and environmental damage as well as exploiting and polluting the water reserves of India. Through the urges given during the summer events, children and young people are driven to responsibly interact in consumer’s society, trying to find how to use spending power to improve the world. ” ” ” “
