A competition for children and teenagers to make them "aware of their rights, so as to protect them better": Jacques Barrot, deputy-president of the EU Commission, in charge of justice, freedom and security, launched an initiative today, called "Children’s right to be protected". People aged between 10 and 18 are asked to create a poster about the subject of the competition: they will be divided into two age groups (10-14 years old and 15-18 years old) and will have to form teams of at least four members each. Then, there will be two selection stages, a nationwide one and a Europe-wide one. The best posters will be used in the future European campaigns for the defence of children’s rights, including the right to be protected. Details of the competition are available at www.eurojeune.eu. "Protecting and raising awareness of children’s rights, especially the right to be protected that all children and teenagers benefit from, are goals shared by the EU and the member states", stated Barrot. Being able to say "I am entitled to be protected" means "for a child to assert a fundamental value of Europe".
