GUATEMALA: THE BISHOPS FOR IMMIGRANTS

” “"The Catholic Church of Guatemala is deeply committed to immigrants". This is written in a document of the Bishops Conference of which the agency Fides relays some passages. A problem has to do with the poverty that forces many to migrate to the United States. The phenomenon, report the bishops, entails other serious problems, such as the presence of traffickers in human beings (known as "coyotes"), especially at the border between Mexico and the United States, where "the trade and trafficking of human beings" are frequent, "since that’s the place where very many people come who need guides in the Central-American area and to pass so many checks in Mexico". In addition, there are international traffickers’ networks, "a human structure which includes state institutions and private companies" to which the immigrants are bound to pay huge sums of money to go on their trips. Given the situation, the bishops mention the human rights of the immigrants who "are not yet part of the state responsibility", so that "there are currently large gaps in the existing protection legislation. The states do not accept yet the immigrants’ right to stay where one finds better working conditions". In addition, migrations carry along many other problems, such as family break-ups. ” “
