The Managing Director of Unesco, Koïchiro Matsuura, has announced the four winners of the 2008 "Unesco literacy award" which this year was focussed on the relation between literacy and health. The awards (20 thousand US dollars each), which will be given to the winners on September 8th in Paris on the occasion of the World Literacy Day, will be allocated to projects in Brazil, Ethiopia, South-Africa and Zambia. In the South-American country, the prize will be given to "Alfabetizando com saude", a schooling and health care scheme that is being carried out in the city of Curitiba; in Zambia, the Unesco award has been won by "Reflect and Hiv/Aids" of the "People’s action forum" which promotes women’s literacy "for the prevention and treatment of diseases, especially in rural areas". The other awards have been won by the "Kwanibela Project" for women in the countryside of South-Africa and by the "Association for non-formal education of adults in Ethiopia" (Anfeae) for the "Literacy plus" scheme for "women’s literacy, the prevention of diseases and the settlement of conflicts"; "a genuine paragon – comments Unesco – of innovation and people’s emancipation".
