BENEDICT XVI: ANGELUS, "FOR CHRISTIANS, TO BEAR THE CROSS IS NOT AN OPTION"

The fight against evil "is not over: evil does exist and resist in every generation, even today". It was said yesterday morning by Benedict XVI, before saying the Angelus prayer from Castel Gandolfo. "What are the horrors of war, the abuse of the innocent, the misery and injustice that rage against the weak, but evil opposing to the Kingdom of God? And how to respond to such iniquity, but with the unarmed strength of love which conquers hatred, of life which is not afraid of death?", wondered the Pope, who added: "It is the same mysterious strength that Jesus used at the cost of being misunderstood and deserted by many of his men". To "fully accomplish" the work of salvation, explained the Holy Father, "the Redeemer keeps associating to Himself and His mission men and women who are willing to take the Cross and follow Him". In this respect, "as much for Christ as for Christians, to bear the Cross is not therefore an option, but a mission to be embraced for love". "In our current world, where dividing and destroying forces seem to prevail – concluded the Pontiff –, Christ never stops offering His clear invitation to everyone: those who want to be my disciples should recant their selfishness and bear the Cross with me".
