CLIMATE AND ENERGY: EUROBAROMETER, "CITIZENS ASK EUROPE TO ACT"

European citizens are "worrying very much" about climate change, and declare to be ready to act to fight this phenomenon. The survey made known in Brussels by Eurobarometer today was carried out on a sample of thirty thousand people in the 27 EU member States, plus Turkey, Croatia, and Macedonia. According to the experts of the community public opinion survey institute, "the majority of Europeans believe that the goals fixed by the European Union in relation to greenhouse gas reduction and increase in the quantity of renewable energies from today to 2020 are reasonable or even too modest". Stavros Dimas, environment commissioner, commented: "The message we perceive is that the majority of citizens sustain the goals of the Union, or want us to do even more" in relation to environment. "Therefore, it is essential for the Parliament and the Council to approve the proposals of the Commission on climate and renewable energies, so that Europe may pursue its goals and meet the expectations of the people". In the survey, 62% of the interviewed believe that climate change, at this stage, is one of the two most serious problems worldwide, surpassed only by poverty (68%). (To be continued)
