THE POPE IN FRANCE: CARD. VINGT-TROIS, "A CHANCE TO KNOW HIM", FIRST POLLS (2)

As for the fear for the reactions which a few speeches by the Holy Father (scheduled in the agenda) might arise in the country, the cardinal said: "The Pope says things serenely and clearly; he never wants to provoke or cause polemics. He is a man who knows how to listen and meet the currents of thought of our time". In the meantime, the French daily "Le Parisien" publishes a poll carried out by CSA on September 3rd and 4th: the majority of French (53%) have got either a "high" or "quite high" opinion of the Pope. On the other hand, 25% of the interviewed said to have a low opinion of the Pope. Of course, the percentage of the people with high opinions grows among the Catholic population, achieving 65%. Finally, over three fourths of French believe Benedict XVI is conservative. A judgement by the people of all ages – it is written in the report –, which is "undoubtedly linked with the impact of the acceptance of the Latin Mass on the French general public". The survey was carried out by telephone and with a sample of 1,002 people aged over 15.
