THE POPE IN FRANCE: TO THE WORLD OF CULTURE, THERE IS NO "BLIND CHANCE" AT THE ORIGIN OF EVERYTHING

"Not irrationality but creative Reason must be at the origin of all things; not blind chance, but freedom". It was said by the Pope, who, in the last part of his speech to the world of culture, pointed out that "the novelty of the Christian announcement is the possibility to tell now to all peoples: He has shown Himself". But this "is not a blind fact" but "a reasonable fact", which requires the "humbleness of reason" to be received, the "humbleness of the man who responds to the humbleness of God". Hence the timeless relevance of the Christian announcement, the "basic scheme" of which can be found in Saint Paul’s speech on the Areopagus, and the similarity, "although their differences", between "our current situation" and the one that Saint Paul found in Athens: "Our cities – concluded the Pope – are no longer full of altars and images of multiple gods. For many, God has truly become the great Unknown. But, just like then the question about the unknown God was hidden and present behind the many images of the gods, likewise the current absence of God is implicitly beset by the question that concerns Him".
