ENVIRONMENT: EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK STARTING NOW

Nearly two thousand cities have joined the seventh European Mobility Week, from today to September 22nd: it includes events to promote public transport, inform the citizens of the harmful effects of exhaust fumes, open new pedestrian areas and cycling paths. The events that will take place in several countries "will probably be attended by more people, because of the rise in oil prices and the fears spread by climate change". Other cities joining the Week include Seoul, Tokyo and Montreal. "The 2008 theme – states the EU Commission – is clean air. Cars and trucks are responsible for most of the atmospheric pollution in urban areas, which is a serious threat to our health". One of the most outstanding initiatives is the one of Marseille, which will measure air quality in a nursery school located along the motorway. Zagreb will host a special Day, giving demos of the instruments that measure air quality; Reykjavik will organise a fair of sustainable transport; Brussels will devote each day of the week to a different means of transport, such as walking and cycling.
