ECUMENISM: ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY ROWAN WILLIAMS IN LOURDES WITH CARD. KASPER

On invitation by the bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes, Msgr. Jacques Perrier, the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, leader of the Anglican Communion, will go on a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Lourdes to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of Virgin Mary. In a note made known by the press office of the archbishop, it is also said that Williams will preach during a Mass to be celebrated on 24 September by Card. Walter Kasper, president of the Papal Council for the promotion of Christian unity. The archbishop – it is written in the note – will take part in a pilgrimage of bishops, priests and laymen of the Anglican Church of England, set up by the "Society of Mary" and the Anglican Sanctuary of Our Lord of Walsingham. "Christian unity – it is also written in the note – is one of the elements of the mission of the Church specifically supported by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes". In fact, dialogue between Catholics and Anglicans concerning Mary led to the drawing up of an important joint document in 2005, with the title "Mary: grace and hope in Christ".
