An appeal, "that the measures required to eradicate destitution, hunger, illiteracy and the plague of pandemics, which mainly affect the most vulnerable ones, may be bravely taken and applied”. It was made to the "leaders of all the countries in the world” by the Pope, yesterday, after the Angelus prayer from Castelgandolfo, speaking of the "high-level meeting" due to take place at the UN on Thursday, September 25th, to take stock of the accomplishment of the Millennium Objectives. “Such commitment went on Benedict XVI , although requiring, great sacrifices, at this time of worldwide financial difficulty, will not fail to produce important benefits for the development of the Nations that need to be helped by the other countries as well as for the peace and welfare of the whole planet”. In addition, the Pope mentioned the "violent cyclones" that over the last few weeks have "hit hard" the Caribbean countries, especially Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the south of the United States, especially Texas. “I would assure again all those beloved populations of my special thought in my prayers”, said the Holy Father, wishing "the most damaged areas will soon be rescued" and, "at least in these circumstances, solidarity and fraternity will win over any other argument”.
