In a "complex and quickly changing media context", according to Card. Erdõ, "the presence of competent and professional Catholic laymen is fundamental". And during this morning’s press conference, he added: "It is a matter of thinking and proposing a professional training which should not be simply technical, but should have humanistic, theologian and ecclesial foundations". "Laymen are also necessary added Card. Erdõ; they should serve the ecclesial communities and the people, to help them have a critical attitude towards media, not to demonize them but to point out both their positive and negative sides. This educational commitment is up to the conscience, which must be able to distinguish good from evil in the world of media, too, in the light of Christian faith and indefeasible values". In those two directions, concluded the cardinal with reference to the CCEE’s research to be presented tomorrow, "many Bishops’ Conferences are already at work, thus confirming that the Church, even in the complex media world, does not give up the responsibility to indicate the path of truth and to contribute to the arousing of conscience".
