MIDDLE EAST: EU PARLIAMENT, "RESPECT FOR PALESTINIAN CONVICTS IN ISRAEL"

” “11 thousand Palestinians, "including "hundreds of women and children", are currently imprisoned in Israeli jails and detention centres. This realisation inspired the drafting of a document, that was passed by the EU Parliament, stating that "around one thousand prisoners are held by way of administrative detention", i.e. with no specific "charges, trials or the right to defence". The document expresses "concern for the report son human rights which state that Palestinian prisoners are the victims of abuse and torture". The MEPs invite Israel to "ensure respect of the minimum detention standards", hold trials for all prisoners and adopt "appropriate measures for the detention of children and for prison visits". In addition, the text acknowledges that "over the last few years, Israel has suffered many deadly terrorist attacks against its civilian population" and supports Israel’s "legitimate worries" about security. It gives a good opinion of the recent releases, deeming they are "auspicious for the peace negotiations". Finally it invites the Palestinian Authority "to do all it can to prevent terrorist attacks".” “
