EUROPE: SARKOZY (EU COUNCIL) MEETS THE RUSSIAN MEDVEDEV AND THE UKRAINIAN YUSHENKO

” “During today’s mission to Moscow, the current president of the EU Council, Nicolas Sarkozy, will ask his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev for a "full enforcement of his commitments regarding the retreat of the Russian troops" from the Georgian territory. Respecting the six points stipulated on August 12th is the prerequisite the 27 member states have laid down to stop the conflict in the Caucasus and revive negotiations for the partnership agreement with Russia, which the EU summit decided to stop on September 1st. In his talks with Medvedev, the French president Sarkozy will insist on the decisions taken by the summit and the choices made by the ministers of foreign affairs of the EU during their meeting in Avignon (September 6th): to send a civilian mission to Georgia to make sure the ceasefire is enforced; to send a police mission to a border area between the two opposing parties; to open an investigation to find out about the responsibilities of the conflicting parties; and to send 500 million euros’ worth of new humanitarian aids. Sarkozy will go with the president of the EU Commission, Barroso. Tomorrow, instead, Sarkozy will meet the Ukrainian president Viktor Yushenko in Evian (France): during the bilateral summit, they will speak again of the situation in the Caucasus, and a declaration about the relations between the EU and Ukraine will be adopted.” “
