Comece: UK Bishops’ opinions of Brexit. “An uncertain future”

(Brussels) “When the United Kingdom negotiates the different trade agreements” with the EU in connection with Brexit, “the Church will have to give a voice to the poor and deprived”: monsignor William Kenney, delegate of the Bishops Conference of England and Wales, told his story to the meeting of Comece which ended in Brussels today. On his part, mgr. Nicholas Hudson, auxiliary bishop of Westminster, said he is “extremely concerned” about the rise in hate crime against foreigners in the United Kingdom that has been noticed after Brexit. “As a Church, we must firmly condemn such crimes”. Mons. Hugh Gilbert of the Scottish Bishops Conference tried to explain why the majority of Scottish people voted “remain”. Then, he mentioned the possibility of a referendum for Scottish independence and then he pointed out that “uncertainty is rife everywhere”. In turn, mgr. Noel Treanor, Bishop of Down and Connor (Belfast) and delegate of the Irish Bishops Conference, said: “Especially young people feel disenfranchised”. Then, he described the potential repercussions on Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Lastly, he noticed that Brexit may impact on the peace process and also remarked that the future looks “uncertain”.
