(Brussels) The European border and coast guard Agency has been officially launched today. The opening event took place at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border between Bulgaria and Turkey, with a presentation of the vehicles, equipment and teams of the new Agency. “Based on the facilities of Frontex, the European border and coast guard Agency will carefully monitor – as explained by the EU Commission in a notice – the external borders of the European Union and will cooperate with the member states to quickly identity and face any threats to the security of the external borders” of the European Union. Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos stated: “Today is a milestone in the history of the management of European borders. From now on, the external borders of a member state are the external borders of all member states, both legally and operationally”. “In less than one year, we have created a veritable border and coast guard system, translating the principles of shared solidarity and responsibility between the member states and the European Union into reality. It is exactly the European response we need to face the challenges of security and migration in the XXI century”.
