(Strasburg) “The role of education in prevention of radicalisation causing terrorism and violent extremism”: that will be the main theme of the 2016 Meeting of the Council of Europe on the religious dimension of intercultural dialogue. The event is taking place at the Palais de l’Europe, Strasburg – seat of the COE – on 9 and 10 November, after the World Forum of Democracy. “The meeting provides a platform of exchange for public powers, religious communities, organisations with non-religious beliefs, and the civil society at large, in order to examine particularly important themes in the religion sphere and intercultural dialogue”, says the press office of the Council of Europe. Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland, President of Ministers’ Delegates, Ambassador Katrin Kivi, and President of PACE Pedro Agramunt will take part in the opening of the works. This year’s is the ninth edition of the meeting, and includes two sub-themes: “education to democratic citizenship in the context of cultural and religious diversity”; “emancipation of women and role of the family sphere in the struggle against radicalisation and violent extremism”. The initiative is supported by members of religious communities (Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists), representatives of non-religious beliefs, interreligious groups, non-profit organisations, youth organisations, experts and members of the academic world.
