“First of all, we take note with respect of the will of the American people in this exercise of democracy which, I was told, was characterised by a large turnout”. The Vatican Secretary of State, Card. Pietro Parolin, said this in the margins of the inauguration of the academic year at the Lateran Pontifical University, commenting to the press on Donald Trump’s victory. “We congratulate the new president and hope that his government may be truly fruitful. We also assure him of our prayers that the Lord may enlighten and support him in the service of his homeland as well as in the service of peace and wellbeing in the world. I believe that today we all need to work to change the global situation which is one of serious lacerations and conflict”. As for the issue of building a wall at the border, an issue on which Pope Francis too had expressed his views, the Cardinal said: “We will see what the president will do. It is generally said: it is one thing to be a candidate and another thing to be president”. The Cardinal went on to add that, “with regard to specific issues, we will see what decisions he makes, and according to that, we will be able to make a judgement. Right now, though, it seems premature to make any judgement”.
