Attack in Nice: messages of sympathy from Europe. Messages from Merkel, Renzi, May, Juncker and Tusk

“Germany is on France’s side in the fight against terrorism. And I am sure that, despite all the problems, we will win this battle. The horror of the attack in Nice is difficult to express with words. All our thoughts are with our French friends”. This has been said by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in response to the massacre caused in Nice by a lorry driven extremely fast among the crowds that were celebrating 14th July. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi writes: “France is mourning, it is grieving, but it is strong and it will always be stronger than the extremists who want to hit it now”, while Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni states: “Nice and Europe horribly hit. With the crisis unit I am monitoring the developments of the situation”. The just-appointed British Prime Minister, Theresa May, claimed: “Our thoughts are with those who have been hit by this terrible accident that happened on a national holiday”. The voice of the president of the EU Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, comes from Brussels: “France can rely on the European Commission as well as on the other EU member states to keep being supported in the fight against terrorism as much inside as outside the European Union. Our resolve will be as unshakeable as our unity”. The president of the Council of Europe, Donald Tusk, points out that the victims “were celebrating liberty, equality and fraternity”.
