Migration: Bocek (Council of Europe), “a political will to handle flows, respect asylum, and protect human rights”

(Strasbourg) “To effectively face the challenges of migration”, the organisation “should take a clear, global, principled approach that addresses all the dimensions of the management of migration”: this has been stated by the special envoy of the General Secretary of the Council of Europe for migration and refugees, Tomás Bocek, in his first report on work, published today. “Stricter border checks have led – a release says – to a constant reduction in the overall number of new arrivals, though a remarkable number of refugees and migrants can be expected to flow into Europe in the next few years”. For the member states, the challenge “is to make sure the measures taken to reduce migratory flows and to rehome rejected asylum seekers are in keeping with human rights. A further challenge will consist in implementing policies that support the social inclusion of refugees and migrants who are allowed to stay in Europe”. The Council of Europe “should keep promoting solidarity between the member states and defending asylum rights. This means taking a ‘tolerance zero’ approach to border rejections and easier access to asylum procedures”.
