“Her face as a mother who has at heart the happiness of her children, who are called by the grace of Christ to walk in newness of life, cannot but enjoy the joyful heaven of communion with God and our brethren”. Cardinal Vicar Angelo De Donatis said this on the occasion of the opening of the diocesan phase of the cause of beatification and canonization of the Servant of God Chiara Corbella Petrillo. After tracing Chiara’s life in the Basilica of St John Lateran, the Cardinal recalled that in the six years since her death, “her fame of holiness has grown significantly, even beyond national borders; it soon became clear, from the day of her funeral and in the media coverage of her story, which drew a lot of attention. Furthermore, her Christian witness has borne and continues to bear fruits of conversion in many people, who are inspired by her story to question themselves on the meaning of life”. “Knowledge of the life of Chiara – he continued – brings hope to many young and less young people, engaged couples and spouses who, in her, almost touch with their hands the closeness of our infinitely good and merciful Lord. Her tomb in the Verano cemetery” in Rome “is often visited by many people who go there to pray and ask for graces”. Following the publication of the Edict, “the diocesan tribunal has received several postulatory letters, which clearly shows that Chiara’s life is generating great interest throughout the Church, not only among people, but at all levels”.
