Pope Francis: to the homeless, “do not cease to dream, teach us to dream”

“Do not cease to dream, teach us to dream!”. Pope Francis entrusted this twofold task to the people who are experiencing, or have experienced, life on the streets as he received them in the Paul VI Hall on the occasion of their Jubilee. Replying off the cuff in Spanish to the testimonies he had just heard, Pope Francis said that for him “a man and a woman are extremely poor when they lose their ability to dream, to carry forward their passion”. “Do not cease to dream! Dream that the world can be changed!”, the Pontiff exclaimed during what was undoubtedly one of the most intense moments in the Jubilee journey, thanks to this unprecedented initiative that he had called for. “What does the dream of a poor, of a homeless person, look like? What will it look like? I do not know, but dream!”. “Poverty is at the heart of the Gospel”, the Pope assured. “Only those who feel they lack something look up and dream, those who have everything cannot dream”. “The humble were following Jesus because they were dreaming”, Pope Francis recalled. Hence “teach all those who have everything, all those who have food and medicines, teach us not to remain satisfied, teach us to dream, teach us to start from the heart of the Gospel!”.
