“An action that shows the willingness of IOR to accept responsibility for abuses perpetrated in the past”. The Holy See Press Office Director, Greg Burke, said this in a statement to the press, as he described the decision taken in the last few days by the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR) to start “a civil action before the competent Maltese judicial authorities against various third parties deemed liable of having caused significant damages to IOR in connection with certain investment transactions in which it participated”. “It is about an operation dating back to early 2013 – Burke told journalists – whose initial investment amounts to 17 million, even if the damage actually suffered should be quantified by the Court of Malta”. “This initiative – a statement from the Holy See Press Office informs – confirms IOR’s commitment, in the interest of transparency, to report to the competent authorities any potential abuses perpetrated against it and to take, as in this instance, any appropriate action to protect its financial and reputational interests, including outside of the Vatican City State”.
