Austria: Schaffelhofer (Catholic Action) on elections, “need for changes in the country”. Closing the door to migrants is not “social Christian”

On the results of yesterday’s parliamentary elections in Austria, President of Austrian Catholic Action (KAÖ) Gerda Schaffelhofer said to be “aware” of the pressing “need for changes in our country”. According to Schaffelhofer, it is necessary to start from “changes in political culture and political style” with regard to the recent electoral campaign, which is “fortunately over”. Now we hope that all politicians will reflect on the fact that they may take “citizens on their side, convincing them with contents, not by denouncing political opponents”, pointed out President of KAÖ. She said change in understanding political responsibility “does not come from one’s party commitment in the first place, but by seeking wellness of the whole country and the Austrian people. Never again we want to hear “The party first”; never again special interests first, said Schaffelhofer. On the other hand, politics should take care of the weak and the outcast. In this respect, the entity of the electoral programme of future Chancellor Sebastian Kurz should be appraised. Kurz is the leader of the People’s Party, with social Christian inspiration, in origin: “Strengthening immigration laws, as confirmed in the electoral campaign, will not be subscribed by Social Christians in any case”, said the President of Catholic Action. “We hope moderation and sense of responsibility will prevail in the question of migration, too”.
