“Think of water: it is a beautiful thing, it is so important, but to exploit minerals, water is contaminated and Creation is sullied, Creation is destroyed!”. Pope Francis said this off the cuff to explain that when “human beings fall victim to selfishness, they end up ruining even the most beautiful things that have been entrusted to them”. “That is what happened with Creation”, Pope Francis denounced at the beginning of his catechesis today: “We are often tempted to think that Creation is something we own, something that belongs to us and that we can exploit at will, something for which we are not accountable to anyone”. Creation, by contrast, “is a wonderful gift that God has entrusted to us so that we may enter into a relationship with Him and may recognise the imprint of His loving plan, to whose fulfilment we are all called to contribute day by day”. “With the tragic experience of sin, communion with God was broken; we have broken the original communion with all that surrounds us and we ended up disfiguring Creation, making it a slave, submitted to our own caducity. Unfortunately, the consequence of all this is before our eyes, every day”, the Pope pointed out. “When man breaks his communion with God, he loses his original beauty and ends up disfiguring everything around him; and whilst in the beginning all things referred back to the Father-Creator and His infinite love, now they bear the sad and desolate mark of human greediness and pride”.
