Analysis
The September issue of Europeinfos, the monthly newsletter of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE), is now online with an extensive coverage of current affairs. To begin with, there is an analysis of the “Global Compact for Refugees” and the “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration”, two documents that UN Member States have pledged to draw up with the “New York Declaration” of September 2016 and the contribution the Catholic Church can make to the process. 2018 as “the Year of European Cultural Heritage” is the second topic covered: a year that was proposed by the European Commission also to “demonstrate the European institutions’ commitment to cultural diversity and preserving the heritage of our continent”. Then the “doldrums” of EU-Africa trade deals is the focus of attention in the presentation of the EU’s Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) with Africa, which seem stuck for lack of “regional cooperation and sustainable development”. Finally, a reflection on Brexit by COMECE former General Secretary Patrick Daly (from Ireland) and two contributions about the future of the EU complement the newsletter, looking at the Congress that COMECE is organising, in cooperation with the Holy See, in the Vatican at the end of October. It will be on the Future of the European Union, and Pope Francis will also participate. The newsletter is available in English, French and German.
