Bosnia Herzegovina: EU Council renews mandate for Operation Althea. “A government in the citizens’ interest”

Bruxelles: interno del Palazzo Europa

“After the 7th October election, may all leaders zealously strive to form a government at all levels, in the citizens’ interest”. This is the wish that can be read in the conclusions of the Council of EU about Bosnia Herzegovina. The EU Council calls the local authorities to give first priority to making the reforms required to move on towards the European Union, for a full, effective implementation of the reform plan. In this scenario – the document goes on –, the EU Council appreciates the relentless efforts of Operation Althea, which helps the authorities of Bosnia Herzegovina have a peaceful, safe environment at all times. So, the EU Council decided to renew the mandate for Eufor Operation Althea, under the aegis of the UN. In addition, they point out that, during the presentation of the next Strategic Review in 2019, a decision will be taken about the future of Eufor Operation Althea in the Balkan country, in the light of the need to help Bosnia Herzegovina make progress towards EU integration and improve the country’s situation in terms of security. Conclusions include the importance of coordinating Eufor Operations Althea with the other international players working there. Finally, the EU – the document ends – urges the authorities of Bosnia Herzegovina to speed up their efforts for the disposal of surplus ammunition, weapons and explosive devices, and mine clearance.
