“At the time we are writing, our country has not yet overcome the so-called ‘yellow-vest’ crisis: a crisis that reveals an old, very deep discontent, which creates serious mistrust towards political leaders”. The Bishops of the Permanent Council of the French Bishops’ Conference wrote this in a statement that has just been received by SIR news agency, concerning the social and political unrest in the country. “It would certainly be very harmful if this pernicious situation were to continue. But everyone feels, more or less confusedly, that it will be difficult to overcome this crisis because what is at stake is anything but economic: it has to do with our collective ability to hope and build the future”. The Bishops reiterated what they had already said about two years ago: “One has to be deaf or blind not to realize the fatigue, frustration, fear and anger, exacerbated by terrorist attacks and aggressions, felt by a large part of the inhabitants of our country who express a strong desire for change. Indeed, one has to be indifferent and insensitive not to be touched by the situations of precariousness and exclusion experienced by so many people living on our national territory”.
