(Brussels) “On Wednesday, we will start with a discussion on migration. In the summer, tensions between the member states have reappeared once again in connection with migrants flowing to the EU. I wish to openly say that looking for a solution to the refugee crisis is a joint task for all the member states and the EU institutions”. This has been written today by Donald Tusk, president of the Council of Europe, asking the EU leaders to attend an informal summit in Salzburg tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. “If some want to solve the crisis, while others want to use it” politically, the problem “will never be solved”. I hope – Tusk states – that in Salzburg we will be able to put an end to mutual grudges and go back to a constructive approach. It is actually such kind of approach that has produced the desired effects in the last few months: today the flow of irregular immigrants to the EU has gone back to pre-crisis levels”. “After my visit to Cairo with Chancellor Kurz, I have no doubts – he adds – that we should support the idea of calling a summit between the EU and the League of Arab States in early 2019. We should also discuss the potential to upgrade our cooperation with Egypt, even in the area of migration. It’s worth pointing out that the Egyptian authorities have made the fight for human trafficking and smuggling a priority”.
